Imitating Jesus: Interpreting the Scriptures Like Jesus- Sermon 2

September 9, 2012 Creekside Community Church

Creekside Community Church: “Imitating Jesus”

“Interpreting the Scriptures like Jesus”

September 9, 2012 John Bruce – Pastor

JesusreadtheScripturesasonestory. (Luke6:1-5)

Jesus read the Scriptures as a story from history. (Luke 17:26-29, 11:29-32)

Jesus read the Scriptures as a story about Himself. (Luke 24:13-32, 44-47)

For further thought and discussion:

Getting Started

1. What was helpful to you in this week’s sermon? What didn’t you understand?
2. Why do many people think that interpreting the Bible is difficult? What would you say to someone who complained, “The Bible is too difficult to understand. Somebody else can tell me what it means.” What parts of the Bible are the most difficult for you to understand? Why?

Going Deeper

  1. Please read Luke 6:1-5. Why were the Pharisees upset with Jesus and His disciples? How does Jesus answer their objection? What’s Jesus’ point? What does this passage reveal about the way Jesus read the Scriptures? How should the way Jesus read the Scriptures change the way we read the Scriptures? Can you see any benefits of reading the Scriptures the way Jesus read the Scriptures?

  2. Please read Luke 17:26-29 and Luke 11:29-32. What does this passage reveal about the way Jesus read the Scriptures? How should the way Jesus read the Scriptures change the way we read the Scriptures? What should I do if I have a hard time believing that some of the stories from the Old Testament actually happened?

  3. Please read Luke 24:13-32 and 44-47. Why do you think the two disciples’ eyes were initially prevented from seeing the resurrected Jesus? What did they learn from their encounter with Him? What does this passage reveal about the way Jesus read the Scriptures? How should the way Jesus read the Scriptures change the way we read the Scriptures? How might approaching the Bible in this way change what you see?

Application:

What is one thing you learned from this week’s passages that you will apply to your life?
